Isle of Man and EDM Association Join Forces to Build a New Data Economy

The Isle of Man is taking a bold step onto the global stage with a unique approach to trusted data use and innovation, through a new partnership between Digital Isle of Man and international experts, EDM Association (formerly EDM Council).

The EDM Association is a global non-profit association for data management, representing more than 350 organisations across six continents. Its best-practice frameworks and standards are trusted by leading financial, commercial and public sector bodies worldwide.

Through this partnership, the Isle of Man gains access to international expertise, networks and tools that support its ambition to lead in trusted data use.

This will place the Isle of Man at the forefront of a global need – treating data as a valuable, governed asset that can be shared securely and used to drive value for data-rich organisations.

The initiative is a key growth area of the Isle of Man’s digital economy and supports long-term aims in the Isle of Man’s Economic Strategy to build a more resilient, digitally enabled and globally respected economy.

Lyle Wraxall, Chief Executive of Digital Isle of Man, said:

“This partnership puts the Isle of Man ahead of the curve. We’re not just keeping up with change – we’re setting the direction. By creating a trusted way for organisations to govern and use data, we’re opening up new opportunities for investment, innovation and skilled jobs, all while building a digital economy the Island can be proud of.”

“This isn’t just about managing data better, it’s about putting the Isle of Man on the map as the home of a new kind of data economy,” added Wraxall. “It’s about releasing value from data in a transparent, fair and responsible way and leading from the front.”

John Bottega, President of EDM Association, said:

“Managing data as an asset and defining its financial value are key to driving better business outcomes in our data-driven world. EDM Association’s collaboration with the Isle of Man will help pioneer a trusted, transparent data economy. This partnership sets a new precedent in how data can be responsibly governed and commercially leveraged.”

The DAF is a new type of legal structure under Manx law, designed to build trust, securely share and drive financial value from data. This is only achievable by creating a licensed data asset foundation on the Isle of Man. It provides a clear set of rules and roles, ensuring data is used responsibly, compliantly and for the purposes agreed by its contributors, whilst allowing data to be monetised.

As the initiative enters its next phase, Digital Isle of Man will finalise the legal framework ahead of progressing to the Island’s parliament, then begin onboarding pilot foundations and collaborating with key sectors including finance, tech and public services. The Department for Enterprise Executive Agency will be working with local industry to finalise the legal framework, build practical tools and deliver the infrastructure needed to bring Data Asset Foundations to life.

This presents a major opportunity for on-Island firms, particularly in legal, fiduciary, tech and compliance, to help shape and lead a world-first model from the ground up.

Additional Information:

Real-world examples of how DAFs could be used include:

  • Sharing anonymised health data for medical research while protecting privacy.
  • Businesses combining data securely to develop better products and services.
  • Pooling environmental data to support green projects and sustainability goals—aligned with the Island’s UNESCO Biosphere status.
  • Ensuring proper consent for large language models for AI.

Manx law referred to is the Isle of Man Foundations Act 2011.

  • Technology Partner Opportunity: Partner with a technology provider to build tools, shape infrastructure and unlock early access to the Isle of Man data stack. To be initiated August 2025.
  • Community of Practice: CoP jointly led by EDM Council and the Isle of Man. Learn, share and shape the future of responsible data assets. Starts September 2025.

EDM Council and Object Management Group Combine to Create Global End-to-End Data and Standards Authority

First-of-its-kind non-profit trade association to foster the growth of data, software, systems, knowledge engineering, and standards capability

New York/Boston, July 1, 2025EDM Council®, the global association for data management, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the Object Management Group® (OMG®), the open membership, not-for-profit technology consortium. The combination brings together more than 700 corporate and public-sector member organizations, eight regional hubs, and a combined 50-year portfolio of internationally adopted standards and technology into a single non-profit association. The agreement is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025.

With this acquisition, and reflecting the global growth of the organization, EDM Council is now named EDM Association, representing the first-of-its-kind non-profit trade association fostering the growth of data, software, systems, knowledge engineering, and standards capability. It will double its industry reach, representing more than 30,000 professionals worldwide as the leading global community helping organizations build trust and confidence in the data and standards they rely on.

Specifically, it will aggregate a portfolio of globally-adopted data management frameworks, OMG and ISO standards, digital engineering, digital twin, augmented reality innovation, software quality, research, communities of practice, training and more under one roof to deliver seamless support across the data and innovation lifecycle, enabling members to move from raw data to real-world solutions that drive success with a single, authoritative standards partner and community of experts.

“By bringing our two associations together, with OMG’s deep technical heritage and EDM Council’s best practices and governance leadership, we are strengthening the connections between data management, standards and innovation that make data truly portable, interoperable and AI-ready to drive organizations’ success,” said John Bottega, President, EDM Association.

“OMG’s mission has always been to create open, vendor-neutral standards and tech communities that unlock innovation,” said Bill Hoffman, Chairman & CEO, Object Management Group. “Joining forces with EDM Council and forming EDM Association accelerates that mission, expanding our reach and giving our members an immediate on-ramp to enterprise-grade data governance and expanded certification services.”

“Everyone from business leaders, CIOs, CDOs, and regulators are navigating an increasingly complex digital future,” said Peter Serenita, Chairman of the Board of Directors, EDM Association. “Now they finally have a single, integrated organization with a comprehensive end-to-end data capability and roadmap, along with a deep professional network, for gleaning value from their data and technology assets.”

Adding OMG’s standards adoption process ensures that emerging specifications can achieve swift adoption, with potential onward pathways to ISO standardization. The addition of OMG’s communities, such as the Digital Twin Consortium, AREA (Augmented Reality for Enterprise Alliance), and CISQ (Consortium for Information and Software Quality), opens new pathways for innovation across industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, automotive, and defense.

Current members of either organization will benefit from an expanded industry portfolio to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation, access to broader SME expertise and industry insights, strengthened professional development opportunities, and an extended regional presence for global networking.

Eyes on Data: Best Practices and Excellence in Data Management Matter More Than Ever

By Jim Halcomb, Chief Research & Development Officer, EDM Council
Published on TDAN.com

In our increasingly digital economy, data is the oxygen that powers transformation, fuels artificial intelligence, drives regulatory compliance, and sharpens competitive advantage. From cloud migration, machine learning models, and blockchain applications to real-time customer insights and ESG reporting, every strategic initiative hinges on one critical foundation: data.

Yet despite this universal dependence, most organizations still grapple with fundamental data challenges — inconsistent definitions, fragmented governance, escalating regulatory expectations, and massive growth in data’s volume, variety, and velocity. In other words — as every data professional and even every data user understands — data is more critical than ever, and yet harder than ever to manage effectively.

It’s precisely in this high-stakes context that best practices in data management are not just beneficial — they’re essential…
