Speakers Nikhil Rao and Akshat Kumar of McKinsey highlighted the increasing importance of treating data as a product rather than a byproduct of operations. The discussion focused on the practical steps organizations can take to define, implement, and scale data products, and how these approaches can unlock measurable business value.

Throughout the session, the presenters stressed the need for clear ownership, standardized processes, and robust governance frameworks to ensure data products are reliable and sustainable. They shared case studies showing how firms are using data products to improve efficiency, enable decision-making, and reduce friction between business and technology teams. The conversation also touched on challenges, including aligning stakeholders, building trust in data, and integrating AI responsibly into data product strategies.

Polls conducted during the session revealed that most participants are in the early or exploratory stages of adopting data product frameworks, with strong interest in understanding both the opportunities and pitfalls. As Rao noted, “When you think about data as a product, it shifts the mindset—it’s not just about building pipelines, it’s about delivering something of value that users can trust and reuse.”

The webinar concluded with an overview of EDM Association resources, including communities of practice on data products and data marketplaces, as well as frameworks like DCAM and CDMC that support data management maturity and cloud adoption. Attendees were encouraged to continue the conversation through these forums and explore articles, training, and certified catalogs to deepen their knowledge.

Overall, the session underscored that while organizations are at different points in their journey, adopting a product-oriented approach to data is emerging as a key driver of competitive advantage.
