Post-event summary

The webinar titled “AI-Driven Futures: Evolving Human Capital in the Era of Automation,” hosted by the EDM Council’s Women Data Professionals (WDP), discussed the integration and impact of Generative AI (GenAI) in various sectors, particularly education and healthcare. Panelists discussed the rapid advancement of AI technology, the need for effective governance to manage associated risks, and the implications of AI on workforce development.

The conversation was led by experts in the industry:

  • Akilah Williams, S.T.E.A.M. Educator, Clayton County Public schools
  • Mike Goodman, Assistant Vice President, Generative AI and Innovation, Emory Healthcare
  • Moderator: Ethel Anderson, Global, Strategic Account Director, Nexus Cognitive

Mike emphasized the importance of human oversight in AI implementations, highlighting that AI should be seen as a tool that aids but does not replace human decision-making. “AI is a phenomenal tool. It can do a lot of amazing things, but it still needs to be used responsibly and ethically.” He noted the critical need for high-quality data to ensure effective outcomes and stressed that AI applications should be designed with a keen focus on ethical considerations and user outcomes. Mike underscored the idea that AI’s role is to support rather than supplant human capabilities, especially in sensitive areas like healthcare and education.

Akilah discussed the challenges and opportunities of integrating AI into educational settings. She pointed out the hesitation within districts to adopt AI due to the lack of comprehensive policies and understanding of the technology’s capabilities. Williams advocated for partnerships between educational institutions and AI technology providers to better prepare teachers and students for a future where AI is ubiquitous. She emphasized the importance of fostering skills like creativity and critical thinking alongside technical skills to ensure holistic development.

The discussion also touched on the balance between leveraging AI for automation and upskilling employees to work effectively with AI technologies. Both speakers highlighted the need for continuous learning and adaptability in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
