Post-event summary

The webinar titled “Accelerating Action: Advancing Change in Data & AI,” was hosted by EDM Council and Women Data Professionals (WDP) and brought together a distinguished panel of industry leaders to discuss diversity, innovation, and the future of data and AI. Hosted in celebration of Women’s History Month and WDP’s five-year anniversary, the conversation highlighted the importance of representation, leadership, and ethical AI practices in driving change.

Marla opened the discussion by emphasizing the need to move beyond passive data collection and focus on “weeding out bias and ensuring responsible AI adoption to create equitable opportunities.” She underscored that leadership must go beyond awareness and drive tangible action toward equality in data and AI.

The conversation explored breaking barriers for women in data, with Patricia identifying three critical gaps—competence, confidence, and courage. She emphasized the need for upskilling through free training programs, combating imposter syndrome, and fostering leadership opportunities. Andrew echoed this sentiment by stressing the importance of valuing dissenting voices and fostering an inclusive culture where diverse perspectives can thrive.

On the topic of diversity and innovation, panelists discussed how diverse teams drive better business outcomes. Andrew highlighted how bringing in people with varying skills and backgrounds—including non-technical fields—adds value, stating that “if you are only valuable to your organization and not the industry, you are vulnerable to your organization’s choices.” The panel emphasized the need for mentorship, sponsorship, and networking to support career growth and advocate for diversity at leadership levels.

A major point of discussion was overcoming bias in AI and data governance. Dessa warned of biases in AI models due to historically skewed datasets. She urged organizations to develop diverse, high-quality data sources and implement rigorous governance frameworks to mitigate unintended bias. The discussion also highlighted age diversity, recognizing that younger professionals bring fresh perspectives, while seasoned professionals provide historical context and risk awareness.

The webinar concluded with actionable takeaways for aspiring professionals in data and AI. Panelists stressed continuous learning, networking, and leadership development as keys to success. Andrea advised attendees to “wear your innovation hat every day to work”, while others reinforced the need for resilience, adaptability, and engagement in industry communities.

The session celebrated WDP’s achievements and reinforced the ongoing commitment to fostering a more diverse, inclusive, and ethically responsible data industry. As John concluded, “If you see something that needs change, take action—awareness alone is not enough.” The webinar served as a powerful call to action for data professionals to accelerate progress in diversity, equity, and ethical AI.
